"Homes of the Future -- 1940s
style!" Live in Los Altos and
Lakewood and instead of a 10 minute walk to the beach,
it's a 5 to 10 minute drive. The homes, however, are on
generally larger lots for a lower price than
neighborhoods right by the ocean. |
Think of Los Altos and Lakewood
as "Homes of the Future -- 1940s Style". Starting at
Atherton and Bellflower Streets and extending north as far as the eye
can see are modest 2 and 3 bedroom homes built for returning G.I.s
after World War II. Home sizes in these neighborhoods range from about 900 to 1100 sq.
ft. Some have been updated and enlarged over the years, some have
not.
The lots are considerably larger than
in neighborhoods closer to the beach so there is an open and spacious
feeling. There are some pockets of custom homes, in particular
around Lakewood Village.
For architectural aficionados, there
is a small neighborhood of mid-century modern homes designed by Cliff
May in the Rancho area. Some are in beautiful condition, some need attention.
Park Estates is
also full of custom mid-century modern residences on large lots.
Because the homes in these areas are a
five or ten minute drive to the beach (instead of a 5 or 10 minute
walk), home prices in Los Altos and Lakewood are somewhat lower.
